But why is paintball so popular?

Happy Paintballers!

I’ll like to try and write about all aspects of our favourite pursuit on this blog; from the gear we need to cool, funny videos that showcase some the best (and worst) examples of how to rock a paintball field. But I think I’ve been ignoring one key question: why is paintball so popular?

I’ve mentioned before how paintball has seen a pretty steep rise in popularity in recent years, and I think this will probably continue to be the case for a while, but when it comes down to what makes it so good in the first place, well there are a lot of reasons.

Here are my Top 5 reasons, care to add any?

A team sport for individuals

Yeah it’s a team sport, where you need the support and back-up of your team-mates in order to win each game, but that’s not to say there isn’t plenty of room for lone-wolf style missions. In paintball, you get the camaraderie and dynamic of a team sport, but without the annoying hierarchy that tends to go with it.

Adventure and espionage is the name of the game

There are very few pastimes which can match paintball’s inherent degree of subterfuge, danger (not real danger…) and action. It’s exciting, gets the blood pumping and comes with it’s own share of risky situations, but, at the end of the day, you’re always home dry and safe to play another round.

All (paintball) man is created equal

Even in a team, you might have a leader or you might be in defence instead of attack, but really everyone’s in the same boat. Experience can count for a lot in a paintball situation, but the factors which can limit your success in other sports, like age, fitness and skill, can all go out the window when it comes to taking aim with your marker. Everyone is equal, and there’s no such thing as a ‘lucky hit’! Forget trying to be an athlete, this is much more fun.

It’s a physical sport with the physical contact

I think this is where most of the fun lies. Everyone that’s played paintball has come away exhilarated, out of breathe and almost undoubtedly with one or two new bruises. But unlike sports like rugby or martial arts, there is never any direct physical contact, so it doesn’t matter what you weigh or how quick you are, paintball success can still easily become your domain.

Everyone loves gadgets!

This speaks for itself. In this day and age, everybody seems to be into the latest gizmos and gear and paintball is no different. Nothing makes you feel quite as cool as loading up your hopper, pulling down your goggles and testing your marker before stepping into the GameZone. It’s like the best action movie ever, even for geeks.
